"This [entertainment] business is incredibly hard on women. If I had a daughter and she told me she wanted to be an actress, it would make my heart beat a little fast. It’s hard. But there are women who break that mold. And what’s wild is when you see that girl and she’s in her mid-twenties, that’s when a lot of women start feeling like, ‘Okay, this clock is ticking. They’re going to use me up and then spit me out.’ And that’s what this talent does, they use ‘em up and they spit ‘em out. But [I] see some women and I’m like, ‘Oh, she’s going to last. She’s going to be around for awhile.’ There’s that inner strength. We need those women. We need those actresses who can tackle these roles and not just be the pretty [one] but chang[ing] and morphing and tak[ing] these leading roles. I hope [that] there’s more opportunities out there for them."

"There are so many comedies in which a guy plays a man-child and that’s seen as funny. So I wanted for a woman to do that and show, actually, how sinister that is. Also, women are always supposed to be likable in movies, it’s the men who get the juicy parts. I wanted to make a female character who was unlikable but also interesting"

"I’ve been fortunate to have interest from actors in my scripts. I honestly suspect this has nothing to do with the quality of my writing. There are so few good roles for women out there and I give them an opportunity to do a different kind of character. [Which means writing roles in which women] get to do more than play Adam Sandler’s wife."

"I believe in just having as many representations as possible of women onscreen … good, bad, shitty, whatever. There just needs to be volume."

"Now, in my 50s, I have turned to producing rather than acting, partly because I love a challenge, but also because I am simply not going to get work in films unless I make them myself - there are parts out there for middle-aged women, but they tend to be of a similar type: the wicked stepmother, eccentric mother or bitter spinster. Only when you move into old age do ‘character’ roles come up: grandmothers, elderly queens or ancient retainers."

"Say you are a parent choosing between two popular movies for a 14-year-old daughter and a female friend, like I was last summer. One movie is about a girl navigating — with intelligence, poise and wit — the treacherous, slut-shaming waters of high school. In the end, she finds a great guy to go to dinner with. The other is a classic American success story about a brilliant young man whose idea changes the world, and in which every woman but one is crazed, materialistic or half-naked eye candy. The first is “Easy A.” The second, “The Social Network."
