PAPUA NEW GUINEA: Sexual violence forcing girls out of school →

“If a girl is raped, she may be blamed and beaten by family members. If she gets pregnant, she misses one year of school and may not be able to go back. Even if she doesn’t [fall pregnant], she’s already a different person. The trauma makes it difficult for her to concentrate on school work.”

"The thing about activism is that it really starts with you. Brush away the overwhelming scope of the problem and you’ll realize it’s honestly that simple. If we vow as individuals to right wrong where we see it and shape our actions toward others in a compassionate, loving and considerate way, then we have already succeeded. We need parents who will raise their daughters to be strong and unwilling to accept the inequalities and restrictive norms thrust upon them from birth. We need parents, especially mothers, to raise their sons to respect women in a culture which quickly encourages them to do otherwise."

"In the US and around the world young boys are sold for sex and used for exploitative child pornography. In the US, New York City has long been known as a hub for trafficking young boys for sex. In the Caribbean, young boys sold for sex are known as ‘cabaña boys,’ and in Sri Lanka, young boys are the majority of child victims."

"[There’s a myth that] children involved in the child sex trade in the US are trafficked from foreign countries. Most children being sold for sex in our nation are American children. Our nation’s child victims are from New York City, Atlanta, Chicago, Detroit, Miami, Los Angeles, Dallas and everywhere in between. While children from abroad are trafficked here as well, they are the minority in the US commercial child sex trade."

"I’m not anti-pink. I’m not anti-princess. I’m not anti-girly. I’m anti-limitation. I want my daughter to be bold. I want her to be unafraid to be intelligent. I want her to be respected for her accomplishments. I want her to know that she can be an astronaut, a doctor, a pilot, a carpenter, a firefighter. She will not be raised to think that the world belongs only to boys and that she is merely a pretty thing in it."
